MOTOR CONTROL CENTERS (MCC) & INDUSTRIAL MOTOR CONTROL

Panel Elektro PFlex Motor Control Centers (MCC) are engineered as project-specific low-voltage panel solutions that bring motor starting, electrical protection, speed control and process monitoring functions together within a centralized, modular system. For production lines, heavy industry, infrastructure and data center cooling applications with high motor density, fixed, plug-in, removable or withdrawable (draw-out) configurations can be selected according to the modular system and project requirements. Mini-withdrawable units can also be considered where higher functional-unit density is required.

KEY TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES & STANDARDS

Fixed / Removable / Withdrawable

Flexible MCC Architecture

Fixed, removable and withdrawable MCC functional-unit arrangements can be selected according to project, maintenance and operational requirements. Depending on the modular system, mini-withdrawable units may also be used where a higher number of functional units per section is required.

IEC 60947

Type-1 / Type-2 Coordination

Motor protection, control and starter equipment are selected from Type-1 or Type-2 coordination arrangements in line with IEC 60947 and the technical characteristics of the application.

PLC / VFD / Soft Starter

Automation & Drive Integration

Conventional or PLC-based control can be integrated with variable frequency drives, soft starters and industrial communication systems according to project requirements.

Form 2–4

EN 61439 Separation

Depending on the selected PFlex configuration, Form 2, Form 3 and Form 4 internal separation options can be applied in accordance with EN 61439 requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions About Motor Control Centers (MCC)

A Motor Control Center (MCC) is a centralized motor control, protection and automation system that brings together the equipment required to start, protect, control and monitor multiple electric motors within a modular low-voltage switchboard.

MCCs can be configured according to the project's maintenance strategy, selected modular system and operational requirements:
  • Fixed MCC: Switching and control equipment is permanently mounted inside the switchboard, providing a compact and straightforward solution.
  • Plug-in MCC: Functional units use a plug-in connection arrangement designed to support easier maintenance and replacement.
  • Removable MCC unit: The functional unit can be physically removed from the switchboard according to the selected modular system.
  • Withdrawable (draw-out) MCC unit: The functional unit can be moved between dedicated operating positions depending on the selected system, supporting maintenance and operational flexibility.
  • Mini-withdrawable MCC unit: A compact withdrawable arrangement that can be selected where higher functional-unit density is required.

In MCC applications, motor protection coordination and the selection of control and starter equipment can be engineered according to Type-1 or Type-2 coordination arrangements based on the IEC 60947 series and the technical requirements of the application. IEC 60947-4-1 is applied for motor starters and coordination.

PCCs and MCCs perform different but complementary functions within an electrical distribution system:
  • PCC (Power Control Center): Primarily handles main power distribution and the supply of higher-power loads.
  • MCC (Motor Control Center): Is designed for starting, protecting, controlling and monitoring electric motors.
In industrial facilities, PCC and MCC systems can be used together as complementary parts of the same electrical infrastructure.

Yes. MCCs can be integrated with different control and automation architectures according to project requirements:
  • PLC integration: Motor run, stop, fault and status signals can be transferred to higher-level automation or SCADA systems through hardwired I/O or industrial communication networks.
  • Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs): Motor speed can be adjusted to process demand and, depending on the application and load profile, may contribute to improved energy efficiency.
  • Soft starters: These can be used where controlled motor starting and stopping are required.

A withdrawable (draw-out) MCC can be preferred where operational continuity, maintenance flexibility and functional-unit replacement are important. Depending on the selected modular system, withdrawable units can provide dedicated removed, isolated, test and connected positions, while the final MCC construction is selected according to the project's operational requirements and maintenance strategy.

MCCs can be used to start, protect, control and monitor motor-driven equipment in data center cooling and mechanical systems, including chiller motors, chilled and condenser water pumps, cooling tower fans and HVAC equipment. Depending on project requirements, VFDs, soft starters, PLC integration and communication with higher-level automation or SCADA systems can also be incorporated.
